Back Problems?
For information, support and a sympathetic ear, call the BackCare
Helpline
Tel: 0845 130 2704
Established in April 2004 and staffed by
back pain experienced volunteers, the BackCare Helpline offers an invaluable support and information service
to back pain sufferers. The Helpline also runs an on line email answering service.
Please note that the help and information offered should be a supplement to, not a substitute for, professional
medical advice
Callers hear about the Helpline as a result of items in the media, from friends, from other help lines or
health professionals who have referred them to us. Calls can last as little as a few minutes to an hour. In
an average 3 months the Helpline receives 457 calls in shift and answers 326 of them.
In an average quarter 13% of our calls are from overseas.
Our typical helpline caller is:
- female,
- lives in Central England,
- is seeking information on managing back pain,
- is likely to have found out about us from a website or magazine,
- is interested in information on exercise, relaxation and probably a cluster of
factsheets that make up pain management alternatives,
- will have suffered with back pain, possibly sciatica, for over 2 years.
Our Helpline is independently audited and out of a sample of 33% of callers, 96% gave it a high value rating
overall, incorporating standard of information given over the phone, friendliness of the volunteer and
quality of factsheets.
The online email service was established in 2007 and has answered nearly 500
emails in that time.
